PWMRC uses Digitrax control in both its permanent and modular layouts. There are other brands of DCC that are compatible just as other brands of trains are compatible. We can control our switches , we can turn sound on or off or lights on or off in the locomotives with these remotes. The larger one can run two locomotives at once, whereas the smaller one just gives you basic functionality for one locomotive. Normally to make it work your locomotive is the number on the cab.
The Java Model Railroad Interface is a suite of programs and is a single download. Don't worry about about trying to get each part separately - they're all bundled together. Also, you do not need to use each part of the suite to get a specific task done - that is you don't need to setup the automation part if all you want is to quickly program your decoders.
As the name says, it is built upon Java technology, giving it a degree of platform independance. Your computer must be capable of running Java. The version of Java that will work with your computer also determines the features JMRI offers you.
What If I Don't Know What ALL That Means?
DC control, generally considered to be an analogue control. Usually for most it comes in beginner sets and may look like this if you purchase that brand. This is the default power that makes the train run on Direct Current or on "DC" power right out of the box. It doesn't need Digitrax to run. DC power usually can control one train at a time with a forward or reverse switch at the top . Many of the more modern locomotives are being sold with what's called a "Plug n Play" connector that can quickly make them DCC compatible. If you are running your locomotive right out of the box, it is unmodified and will run on the direct current supplied by this unit. . Most of the time A person who uses this does not operate a large model railroad generally. Should you want to run your unmodified locomotive on a layout governed by Digitrax, you would need to use the setting "00" or "Double O" as we like to sometimes call it.
