It is the middle of the summer and it's over 90 degrees...what better to do than play with trains in air conditioning? Quite a few people agreed and joined us for our monthly Open House on August 5, 2006. Everyone had great fun...and all without breaking a sweat!

Our regular monthly Open House is the first Saturday of the month...come & see our progress.

On a bright day a black steam locomotive paints a silhouette against the trees in the distance. Brion Boyles' Mississippi Central is straining under a load of logs as it heads to the sawmill. On a hot day the cab of the steamer is a very hot place to be, but our engineer is in a relaxed pose as he keeps a firm hand on the throttle crossing the viaduct at Dillinger.

It's late in the day and at least two crews still have a ways to go before they can have dinner. Lynn's Illinois Central is running fast with a long string of grain cars as he crosses the bridge at Cooper's Holler. The Mississippi Central load of wood is moving slow today and has moved onto the siding to let the faster freight through.

The quiet in the sleepy town of Armstrong is broken by the sound of a fast freight moving through. The colorful freight cars are nothing but a blur in this little 'burg.

Photo by Jim Connal The Nickel City Lines have a great reputation for on time passenger service and dependable commuter trains, but the coffers are kept full by hauling coal and lots of it. With two big diesels at the front of a long coal drag, Bob climbs out of Cooper's Holler toward Dillinger.
Looking quite lonely on the siding at Possum Branch, we find a couple of boxcars cars waiting to be picked up by the next local freight. Fresh from the paint shop on the right is Rob's Powell's Creek & Old Dominion from Boy Scout Troop 964. The nicely weathered boxcar on the left is Brion Boyles' Gulf, Mobile & Northern.
Photo by Jim Connal Union Station in Evansport is a busy place most of the day. Evansport has become a major stop for the Virginia Railway Express commuter operations. In the background it appears that City Hall is getting the windows washed today.
Lynn's Illinois Central rounds the curve above Evansport with a load of grain. He's hard on the brakes for the decent into Evansport and keeping watch for the heavy traffic in the area.
