        "Armstrong"

As you enter the south room of the Historic Quantico Depot the first area you encounter is the Village of Armstrong.  A small, sleepy place with a siding serving a few local industries.  Many PWMRC members contributed to the building of Armstrong...Bob R, Paul R, Brion, Ashley J, The Sissons, Dave P, Bill L, Hugh M, Pete, Don, Scott, and others.

It all starts with benchwork.  Using plywood and an upper layer of Homasote for the top, the benchwork is built using heavily-braced framework.  The plywood is screwed down and then the cork roadbed is put down to receive the flextrack and turnouts. Photo by Jim Connal
The landforms are made using extruded-form insulation that is cut with a hot wire tool to make the terrain contours.  Paul is applying a layer of plaster to be the base for the scenery.  Using a variety of techniques, the plaster is also used for the roads and track crossing.  While the scenery work is going on above the benchwork, the wiring crew is working hard underneath and out of sight.  Power is supplied via buss wires with feeders soldered to the track at intervals.  Most turnouts are controlled with Tortoise switch machines under the table.  Control is state-of-the-art using Digitrax DCC systems. The plaster scenery base over the foam is perfect for rock carvings in a variety of styles.  In the photo at right, most of Armstrong is still unfinished, but this small rock cut gives a view of future work. Photo by Jim Connal
This is a high-level view of the same rock cut (and the now-famous) John Deere tractors.  Parts of the track have been ballasted using Woodland Scenics ballast.  Notice how the same area of scenery can change in appearance as the light changes. Photo by Jim Connal
A bit further down the track and on a different day, the strong light from the window glints off one of the shiny tractors.  The scenery has been enhanced with ground foam to simulate low growth and bushes.  The backdrop has been painted to continue the illusion on the wall. Photo by Jim Connal
While several members are working on the permanent buildings for Armstrong, these temporary structures have been used to give the visitor a flavor of what Armstrong will look like when finished. Photo by Jim Connal
With some custom-built trees added and the finished hillside in the background, Armstrong has already become a favorite spot for photographers.  Armstrong Texaco and the farmhouse give a genuine small-town feel to Armstrong. Photo by Jim Connal
